The Incident
On Sunday, April 9th a video
had gone viral of a passenger on board, David Dao, 69, being
forcibly removed from an United Airlines flight. A law enforment officer grab David, and drag him down the row in the plane in efforts to remove him. The victim made multiple pleas to stop hurting him, and that he needed to be at work the next day because he was a doctor. The cries didn't seem to affect the officer's decsion, leading to the man being injured, and covered in blood within seconds. The passenger had suffered a
broken nose, a concussion, damages sinuses and lost his two front teeth when he
was dragged off the United Airlines.
It was later discovered that the issue intially started due to lack of room onboard. United Alrelines had to begin removing passagers from the flight in order to make room for United's employees. At first they had offered a $800 voucher to leave the flight, in which Diavid Dao and his family had initally accepted. But when David Doa had found out they would need to wait until the next day, he declined the offer, as he claimed "I can't be late. I'm a doctor. I've got to be there tomorrow"

After the initial break of the video, the CEO Oscar Munoz released a statement on the following Monday. "I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers. Our team is moving with a sense of urgency to work with the authorities and conduct our own detailed review of what happened. We are also reaching out to this passenger to talk directly to him and further address and resolve this situation". The response was followed with an outrage online, in which many people called the CEO's response insensitive and overly callous.
After the incident, media outlets began
playing video that initially broke, causing United Airways to face a lot of
negative pressure. Overnight over 100 million people worldwide had seen the
shocking video, and United Airways even became trending on twitter with the
hashtag #BoycottUnitedAirlines. Not only did United Airlines face bad
publicity, but their shares went down 2.6%, taking
away approximately $600 million in the company's market share value, making the stock among the biggest percentage decliners in the
S&P 500. With a combination of bad PR and declining sales, United Ailines may find themselves in a very deep hole.

Hi Louis, you did a wonderful job on the first blog! I am looking forward reading more. This situation went viral, so quickly, and people still talk about it! It surprises me that one incident had such a huge impact on United Airlines' stocks; but it was still unacceptable and wrong of them to violently remove David Dao from the airplane. They could have done this with a different approach.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I am surprised myself at how viral the situation became! There was definelty a different approach. I believe united might be coming out with new policies to change this protocol!
DeleteHi Louis
ReplyDeleteWow these are good post and make me want to read more about them. It really shocked and thought about United Airlines. I need to research about them and keep eye on when I travel on United Airlines. It seems they aren't friendly.
Simona
In the past, United has had other unfriendly incidents similar to this one as well. Just a month prior, United removed two girls from the plane because they were wearing leggings and that wasn't "travel appropriate". I also think the industry as a whole needs to change, and I think many of the problems in route back to the fact that there is a very small amount of competition In the airline industry, leading to similar standards.
DeleteI loved your layout in your blog, and its make the blog so inviting and revealing! It has great sources, and you provided every sources that is needed to support your details. The video at the beginning of the blog clearly shows me the plot of the incident at United's aircraft. Great job, Louis.

Thanks a ton Chandler. I worked hard the ensure the blog looked professional, while comfortable in layout! Glad you enjoyed it!
DeleteI definitely agree that United Airlines are in very deep hole. Not only that, it also said a lot about their business. I remember that the employees rarely smile around the customers and very rude. What CEO said about the situation confirm my questions about employees' attitude at the airplane. All of them are not thinking about their customers and even that doctor who was dragged out. That saddens me. Anyway, I liked reading your first blog.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the input Haley. It comes ot show what the leader does in an organization/company, may impact the quality of frontline workers attitudes and perspective, and affect the work culture.
